How pot odds work

Pot odds are the price of a call. If the pot is 100 and someone bets 50, you must call 50 to win the 150 already out there, so you are getting 3-to-1. Turn that into a percentage and you need to win at least 25% of the time for the call to break even.

Compare that required number to your equity, which is how often your hand actually wins. If your equity is higher than the price, calling makes money over time. The calculator above does both steps: it gives the equity you need, then checks it against your draw.

Pot odds by bet size

Bet sizeEquity neededPot odds
1/3 pot 20% 4 : 1
1/2 pot 25% 3 : 1
2/3 pot 28.6% 2.5 : 1
3/4 pot 30% 2.3 : 1
Pot 33.3% 2 : 1
1.5x pot (overbet) 37.5% 1.7 : 1
2x pot 40% 1.5 : 1

Bigger bets demand more equity. That is why a draw can call a small bet but should fold to an overbet.

Frequently asked questions

What are pot odds in poker? +

Pot odds are the price you are being offered to call a bet, expressed as the ratio of the amount you must call to the total pot you would win. They tell you the minimum equity your hand needs for calling to break even.

How do you calculate pot odds? +

Divide the amount you must call by the total pot after your call. If the pot is 100 and your opponent bets 50, you call 50 to win 150, so you need 50 / 200 = 25% equity. As a ratio that is 3-to-1.

What pot odds do I need for a flush draw? +

A flush draw has 9 outs, about 36% equity on the flop. That beats the 25% needed against a half-pot bet and the 33% against a pot-sized bet, so a flush draw can profitably call most flop bets on pot odds alone.

What is the difference between pot odds and equity? +

Pot odds are the price of the call (how much equity you need). Equity is how often your hand actually wins. You have a profitable call when your equity is greater than the equity the pot odds require.

What is the rule of 2 and 4? +

A shortcut for draw equity: multiply your outs by 4 on the flop (two cards to come) or by 2 on the turn (one card to come) to estimate your percentage. Nine flush outs is about 36% on the flop and 18% on the turn.
