What are the pot odds on a 2x pot overbet?
A 2x pot overbet needs about 40% equity to call, which is 1.5-to-1.
One-card direct odds assume you fold after a miss and pay no further bets. Use by-the-river odds when this call guarantees both cards, such as an all-in or a guaranteed free river.
A double-pot overbet is a polarizing size that demands 40% equity to call. Almost no single draw clears that bar, so your continuing range narrows to made hands and big combo draws. Folding most draws here is correct.
Worked example: the pot is 100 on the river and your opponent bets 200. You call 200 to win the 100 already there plus the 200 bet, 300 in total. 200 to win 300 is 1.5-to-1, and 200 divided by 500, the pot after your call, is 40%.
Draws are not the point at this size. With chips behind even a combo draw hits the next card only 31.9% of the time, and it takes a combo draw that is all-in on the flop, at 54.1%, to clear 40%. A double-pot bet is a river weapon: it says the bettor holds either a very strong hand or a bluff, and it prices a bluff-catcher so that calling only works if the bettor bluffs more than two times in five. Against most players that is too often, so the fold is usually right.
Quick tip: A 2x pot overbet needs 40% equity. Single draws almost never have it.
