Do you have the odds to call a pocket pair hoping to hit a set?
A pocket pair has 2 outs to make a set: 4.3% on the turn, 4.3% on the river, and 8.4% by the river when both cards are guaranteed.
Table shortcut, outs × 2 for each card you see: 2 × 2 = 4% for a one-card call, and 2 × 4 = 8% when this flop call guarantees both cards. Both land within 0.4 points of the exact 4.3% and 8.4%, close enough to use at the table.
One-card direct odds assume you fold after a miss and pay no further bets. Use by-the-river odds when this call guarantees both cards, such as an all-in or a guaranteed free river.
Hitting your set is a long shot on any single street, so direct pot odds almost never justify the call. Set mining is an implied-odds play: you call a small price preflop or on the flop hoping to win a big pot the times you hit your set. The rule of thumb is you want the bet to be small relative to the stacks behind.
On one-card direct odds, 2 outs can call a bet up to about 5% of the pot on the flop and up to about 5% of the pot on the turn on direct odds alone. When a flop call guarantees both cards, including all-in or a free river, both cards count, and then 2 outs can call a bet up to about 10% of the pot. Anything bigger has to be paid back by what you win when you hit.
Quick tip: Two outs hit the next card only 4.3% of the time, so set mining has to pay off through implied odds.
